COVID-19 cases are rising in parts of Asia, including Thailand and China

A fresh wave of Covid-19 is sweeping through parts of Southeast Asia, with countries like Hong Kong, Singapore, China, and Thailand reporting a noticeable rise in infections. Health officials across the region are urging caution as the virus regains momentum.

Singapore: Singapore has experienced a 28 per cent increase in COVID-19 cases in early May, recording 14,200 infections as of May 3. Hospitalisations have also risen by around 30 per cent, with daily admissions increasing from 102 to 133. However, ICU admissions have slightly declined, dropping from 3 to 2 per day. The primary strains driving the current surge are ‘LF.7’ and ‘NB.1.8’, both subvariants of ‘JN.1’.

Hong Kong: Health authorities in Hong Kong have confirmed a new wave of infections. The positivity rate for respiratory samples has jumped sharply – from 1.7 per cent in March to 11.4 per cent, exceeding levels seen during the August 2024 peak. So far, 81 severe cases and 30 related deaths have been reported, most involving elderly individuals with pre-existing health conditions.

China: Covid-19 cases in China are once again on the rise, approaching levels seen during last summer’s peak. According to the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, testing positivity rates have more than doubled in recent weeks, indicating a broad resurgence of the virus.

Thailand: Thailand has reported a spike in infections following the April Songkran Festival. Health officials have identified two cluster outbreaks and are monitoring the situation closely to prevent further spread.

As the situation evolves, health experts across the region are advising the public to take extra precautions and remain vigilant, especially vulnerable groups such as the elderly and those with underlying health conditions.
