Several people are feared to be trapped inside a flooded coal mine in the Umrangso area of Dima Hasao district in Assam on Monday, January 6. The incident occurred at Coal Mine No. 19 in Tin Kilo after water rushed into the site, as reported. The coal mine is located near the Meghalaya border.

Mayank Kumar Jha, SP Dima Hasao, told news agency ANI that the number of individuals involved is unknown. “Several people feared trapped inside a coal mine in Umrangso area in Dima Hasao district. We can’t say the exact figure as of now,” Jha said.

Shortly after the news broke, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma shared an update on the situation via his handle on X.

“Distressing news from Umrangshu, where laborers are trapped in a coal mine. The exact number and status are yet unknown. The DC, SP, and my colleague, Kaushik Rai, are rushing to the site…We have requested the Army’s assistance in the ongoing rescue operation. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are also on their way to the incident site to aid in the efforts (sic),” wrote Sarma.
