BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia clarified that Shreyas Iyer did not undergo surgery, but instead received a medical procedure aimed at stopping internal bleeding.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that star batter Shreyas Iyer did not undergo surgery following his recent injury, contrary to earlier reports. Instead, he underwent a non-surgical procedure to treat internal bleeding caused by a spleen injury.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said Iyer’s recovery has been quicker than expected, raising hopes of an early return to action. “He has responded very well to treatment and has been moved out of the ICU. His progress has been remarkable,” Saikia stated.

Iyer sustained the injury during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney when he dived in the field and landed awkwardly. Medical experts had initially estimated a six to eight-week recovery period, but officials now suggest he may return sooner than anticipated.

The BCCI is monitoring Iyer’s condition closely and will take a final call on his return after further medical assessments.
