India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer is reportedly in a stable condition after suffering a spleen laceration during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney, India’s T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav confirmed.
Iyer sustained the injury while fielding near the boundary, landing awkwardly on his left side after taking a catch. He was immediately taken to a hospital, where scans revealed internal bleeding caused by the impact.
According to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Iyer remains under medical observation in Sydney, and a specialist team is monitoring his recovery. The 30-year-old was initially moved to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) as a precaution.
Speaking ahead of the upcoming T20I series, Suryakumar Yadav said, “Shreyas is stable now. We’ve been in touch with him and the medical staff. He’s recovering and responding well.”
Iyer’s injury has cast doubt on his participation in India’s next assignments, with doctors expected to recommend a rest and rehabilitation period once his condition stabilises further.
