In the wake of Assam icon Zubeen Garg’s tragic death, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) has urged the people of Assam for patience, highlighting the need for time and space to conduct a thorough investigation. The appeal follows ongoing diplomatic engagements, with Acting Singapore High Commissioner Alice Cheng meeting Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in Guwahati on Wednesday. During the meeting, they also discussed Singapore’s collaborative projects with Assam, including trade and tourism initiatives.
Cheng expressed condolences to CM Sarma and the Assamese community over Garg’s passing on September 19, 2025, off Lazarus Island, initially misreported as a scuba diving accident. Preliminary autopsy findings shared by SPF with the Indian High Commission on October 1 ruled out immediate foul play, but officials emphasized the probe’s complexity, requiring careful coordination between Singapore and Indian authorities.
Meanwhile, five suspects, including Sidhartha Sharma, Shyamkanu Mahanta, and Garg’s cousin DSP Sandipan Garg, remain in judicial custody in Assam. A 10-member SIT and judicial commission are working alongside Singapore authorities to ensure a transparent and meticulous inquiry. On social media platform X, SPF requested understanding from Assam’s residents, while CM Sarma welcomed the cooperative stance and promised transparency throughout the investigation.
