Sri Lanka’s humanitarian crisis deepened as the death toll from Cyclone Ditwah–induced floods and landslides climbed to 366, with 367 people still missing and nearly 1.15 million residents affected. Over 218,000 individuals have been displaced, forcing authorities to shift from rescue missions to large-scale relief and rehabilitation efforts across multiple districts.
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake is overseeing nationwide relief operations as teams work to restore essential services, set up temporary shelters, and ensure the supply of food, water, and medical aid to displaced families. The government continues to prioritise emergency support while assessing the extent of infrastructural damage.
India has stepped in as the first responder, launching a swift humanitarian mission. Under Operation Sagar Bandhu, the Indian Army has deployed a specialised contingent—including medical, engineering, and signals units—to support Sri Lanka’s ongoing relief and recovery efforts, reaffirming India’s commitment to assisting its neighbour in times of crisis.
