The Supreme Court has ordered comedian and YouTuber Samay Raina, along with three other comedians, to organise a minimum of two events each month to raise funds for the treatment of persons with disabilities.

The Supreme Court on Thursday, November 27, directed comedian Samay Raina and three others to organise two fundraising events every month to support treatment and welfare initiatives for specially-abled persons, including those with rare and life-threatening disorders.

The order was issued while hearing a petition filed by Cure SMA Foundation of India, which objected to a video in which the comedians allegedly mocked individuals with disabilities. The bench observed that such content was insensitive and violated the dignity of persons living with physical challenges.

Calling the directive a “social responsibility, not a punishment,” the Court said the comedians must use their reach and platforms to highlight real stories of courage and resilience. They were also asked to invite specially-abled achievers to their shows and help raise financial assistance for medical treatment.

The bench, led by Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi, noted that humour must never come at the cost of vulnerable communities and emphasized the need for more awareness around rare diseases and disability rights.

The comedians had previously issued public apologies, but the Court said the matter required meaningful corrective action that contributes to society.
