Multiple complaints were filed against Northeast India Festival (NEIF) chief organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta across Assam after Zubeen Garg’s death in Singapore

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Wednesday, September 24, that the state government has prohibited Syamkanu Mahanta from organizing any functions or festivals within Assam. In a post on X, he stated that Mahanta, along with any organization associated with him, will not be allowed to hold events in the state.

CM Sarma further clarified that the government will withhold all financial support for events linked to Mahanta. This includes grants, advertisements, and sponsorships, whether Mahanta is involved directly or indirectly. Additionally, the state government plans to request the central government not to provide any financial assistance or sponsorship to him in any form.

Shyamkanu Mahanta was the main organizer of the North East India Festival in Singapore, where singer Zubeen Garg was invited. Tragically, Garg, a 52-year-old cultural icon of Assam, died in a drowning incident during the event on September 19. Multiple FIRs have been lodged against Mahanta and Garg’s manager, Siddharth Sharma, and the Assam government has directed the CID to investigate all complaints.
