Tesla has officially entered the Indian automobile market with the launch of its first showroom – an Experience Centre – at Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). Spread across 4,000 square feet, the facility was inaugurated by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, marking a significant milestone in the electric vehicle (EV) giant’s long-anticipated entry into India.
The American carmaker is debuting with the Model Y SUV, which will be available in two variants: Standard and Long Range, priced at Rs 59.89 lakh and Rs 67.89 lakh (ex-showroom), respectively. Although the Model Y arrives as a fully imported unit, its pricing remains competitive against rivals such as the Kia EV6 and Volvo C40 Recharge.
Deliveries for the Standard variant are set to begin this quarter, while the Long Range version is expected to follow in October. At the moment, Tesla will be importing vehicles, and they will be sold as CBUs.
Tesla’s entry comes on the heels of India’s new EV policy, which reduces import duties and encourages global EV makers to invest in the country. Tesla also plans to set up a local ecosystem, including logistics, service infrastructure, and a network of charging stations, signalling a long-term commitment to the rapidly expanding Indian EV market.
“It is a matter of great joy for us that Tesla has launched its first experience in India in Mumbai. Tesla is establishing a logistics and servicing system here. Four big charging stations are also being established by them. I am happy that Tesla chose Maharashtra as the state has become a leader in electric mobility,” said Fadnavis.
He added, “Tesla is launching its Model Y in India. Maharashtra has the most dynamic electric mobility. policy…I believe Maharashtra will be a preferred destination when they decide to do manufacturing in India.”
During the inauguration of the Tesla Experience Centre, Fadnavis also highlighted the company’s global recognition.
The CM said, “This is not just the inauguration of an experience centre but a statement that Tesla has arrived, a statement that it has arrived in the right city and state, that is Mumbai, Maharashtra…Mumbai stands for innovation and sustainability…Tesla is not just a car and car company but stands for innovation and sustainability.”
