The Supreme Court voiced serious concern over Delhi’s soaring pollution levels and urged senior lawyers to attend hearings virtually, warning that masks alone are insufficient protection.

The Supreme Court of India has raised serious concerns over the deteriorating air quality in Delhi, warning that even masks may not fully protect people from the harmful effects of severe pollution.

During a recent hearing, the court advised lawyers to consider appearing virtually instead of attending physically, in order to reduce exposure to the hazardous air. The remarks underscore the severity of the ongoing pollution crisis in the national capital region.

Addressing senior lawyers in a firm tone, Justice PS Narsimha said: “Why are you all appearing here? We have a virtual hearing facility. Please avail it. The pollution – this will cause permanent damage. Even masks are not enough. It will not suffice. We will discuss with the Chief Justice as well.”

Health experts have repeatedly warned that prolonged exposure to Delhi’s current pollution levels can have serious and long-lasting health consequences. The court’s recommendation highlights the urgency of protective measures and the need for broader actions to combat the city’s toxic air.
