Singapore and India are now on a new plane of cooperation

Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam remarked that the relationship between Singapore and India has reached “a new level of cooperation,” emphasizing India’s growing significance as a key player in the global economy.

During a media briefing following his two-day visit to Odisha, Shanmugaratnam underscored India’s strategic relevance for Singapore’s future. “India aims to establish itself as a significant entity in a multipolar world, both in geopolitical and economic terms,” he stated.

He also discussed India’s potential for growth over the next twenty years, highlighting its demographic advantages, developmental progress, skilled labor force, and export capabilities. Additionally, he pointed out that the recent leadership change in Singapore has had a positive effect on bilateral relations, fostering continuity in the enhancement of ties.

When asked about the leadership transition in Singapore last year, which saw Lawrence Wong succeed Lee Hsien Loong after two decades, he affirmed that it has not adversely affected relations with India, stating that the impact has been “exclusively positive.”
