Actor and Bigg Boss 18 fame Chum Darang has voiced her strong support for the Northeastern states following the wave of criticism and negativity directed at the region in the aftermath of businessman Raja Raghuvanshi’s murder in Meghalaya.
The tragic incident has not only sparked public outrage but also raised concerns about the impact on tourism in Meghalaya, with several travel bookings reportedly being cancelled. Amidst the growing chatter and blame being assigned to locals and the state as a whole, Chum has come forward to condemn the generalization and defend her home region.
Taking to Instagram Stories, Chum expressed her heartbreak over the case and the widespread assumptions being made. “This Raja Raghuvanshi case had me shook beyond words. I am sure everyone was worried for the ‘wife’ after the news of Raja being found. But never did I think she would be behind all this. Breaks my heart,” she wrote.
She further added: “Also, I saw a lot of people were blaming the locals, the state, the region, to find out what? I am not saying NE states mein crime hota nehi hai, but sidha logon pe ungli uthana acchi baat nehi hai (I’m not saying the Northeast is crime-free, but directly blaming the people isn’t right). My condolences.”
The case that shook public sentiment involved Indore-based businessman Raja Raghuvanshi, who was on his honeymoon in Meghalaya when he went missing, along with his wife, Sonam. Days later, Raja was found dead. According to Meghalaya Police, the murder was allegedly orchestrated by Sonam in collusion with her boyfriend, Raj Kushwaha.
So far, five individuals have been arrested in connection with the crime: Sonam Raghuvanshi, Raj Kushwaha, Akash Rajput, Vishal Singh Chauhan, and Anand Kurmi. While Sonam was apprehended from a dhaba in Uttar Pradesh, Rajput was caught in Lalitpur (UP), and the remaining three suspects were arrested in Madhya Pradesh.
As the investigation continues, Chum Darang’s message serves as a reminder not to stigmatize entire communities for individual crimes, calling for empathy, fairness, and support for the people of the Northeast.
