In a disturbing incident that has rocked the South Calcutta Law College community, a 24-year-old female law student has alleged that she was gang raped on campus by a former student and two current students on the evening of June 25. Police have arrested three individuals in connection with the case, including one who is reportedly linked to the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), the student wing of the ruling party in West Bengal.
According to the FIR, the incident took place between 7:30 pm and 10:50 pm within the premises of the college, located in the Kasba area. The survivor stated that she was confined and sexually assaulted after rejecting a marriage proposal from the main accused, 31-year-old Monojit Mishra. Mishra, a former student of the institution, is said to have pressured her into marriage, and upon her refusal, allegedly threatened to harm her loved ones and implicate her family in false cases.
Police arrested Mishra along with two current law students – Zaib Ahmed (19), a first-year student, and Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20), a third-semester student. All three were produced before the Alipore court and remanded to police custody until July 1.
According to police, Mishra is a practising criminal lawyer and had introduced himself on social media as the organisational secretary of TMCP’s South Kolkata District unit. While TMCP has denied any current formal association with him, his social media profile suggests ongoing involvement.
In her complaint, the survivor alleged that she was dragged to the college’s guard room, undressed, and raped by Mishra while the other two accused stood by. She said she repeatedly pleaded with them to let her go, citing an existing relationship with someone else. She also claimed the assault was filmed and used to blackmail her into silence.
“I begged, I cried, I touched his feet,” the complaint reads. “But they did not stop. They recorded videos and threatened to leak them if I spoke out.”
The woman said she experienced a panic attack during the ordeal and pleaded to be taken to a hospital, but no help was provided. The college’s main gate had reportedly been locked, and the security guard did not intervene.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage. West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee cut short her trip to Digha and returned to Kolkata on Friday evening to monitor the developments.
TMCP State President Trinankur Bhattacharya responded to the allegations, stating: “Whether or not anyone from TMCP is involved, we demand strict and exemplary punishment. The accused is no longer associated with the student council. If found guilty, he must face the harshest legal consequences.”
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognisance of the case and has directed the Kolkata Police Commissioner to submit a report within 72 hours.
Meanwhile, BJP leader Amit Malviya criticised the ruling Trinamool Congress over the incident, questioning the safety of women under the state government’s watch.
An investigation is ongoing. The college authorities and law enforcement are yet to issue detailed public statements regarding security lapses on the campus.
