US President Donald Trump announced that arrangements are underway for a potential meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The announcement comes after high-level peace talks at the White House involving European leaders, NATO officials, and President Zelenskyy.
Trump described the initiative as a “very good, early step” toward resolving the nearly four-year-long conflict in Ukraine. Discussions at the summit focused on providing security guarantees to Ukraine, coordinated by European nations in partnership with the United States.
Leaders present included French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
Following the summit, Trump personally called President Putin to initiate arrangements for the proposed meeting. Plans are reportedly in motion for a trilateral meeting involving all three leaders after the initial one-on-one discussion. Vice President JD Vance and Special Envoy Steve Whitlock are coordinating logistics with Moscow and Kyiv.
The Kremlin confirmed that Putin held a 40-minute phone call with Trump to discuss the conflict and agreed to maintain close communication. Russian officials expressed appreciation for US efforts to facilitate dialogue.
This development marks a notable step in international efforts to resolve the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
