Two brothers married one woman in a traditional polyandry ceremony

In a rare but culturally significant instance of polyandry, two brothers from Himachal Pradesh’s Hatti tribe married the same woman in a traditional ceremony known as Jodidara. The wedding took place in Shillai village of Sirmaur district, beginning on July 12, and unfolded over three days of vibrant celebrations, including local folk music, dance, and a large gathering of guests.

The bride, Sunita Chauhan, tied the knot with Pradeep and Kapil Negi, embracing the age-old custom still practiced in some tribal regions. Pradeep, who works in a government job, shared, “We followed the tradition openly because we’re proud of it—it was a mutual decision.” Kapil, who lives and works abroad, added, “We’ve always believed in honesty and unity, and we’re committed to giving Sunita a stable, loving home.” Sunita herself said, “I knew about the tradition and made this choice willingly, without any pressure.”

Polyandry, though rare, remains part of the social fabric in parts of Himachal Pradesh, especially in Kinnaur district, and also in the tribal belt of Jaunsar Babar in neighbouring Uttarakhand. The ceremony has drawn public interest as an example of cultural continuity amid changing societal norms.
