A 28-year-old British-Ghanaian artist, Joseph Awuah-Darko, has chosen to end his life through euthanasia rather than continue living with the agony of mental illness. Having openly shared his long struggle with mental health on social media, Joseph relocated to the Netherlands to pursue legal euthanasia due to the unbearable pain of living with bipolar disorder.
He is currently awaiting approval for the procedure, which may take up to four years. In the meantime, he has launched ‘The Last Supper Project,’ where he connects with strangers over dinner to share his personal journey, according to People.
“I am bipolar and I moved to the Netherlands to legally end my life,” Joesph said in an emotional Instagram video posted in December last year. The artist has openly shared his struggles with mental illness, describing how he wakes up each day in “severe pain,” which ultimately led him to choose medically assisted death. He revealed that he spent five years contemplating this decision before submitting an official request to the Euthanasia Expert Centre in the Netherlands.
According to People, Joseph has already travelled to Paris, Milan, Brussels, and Berlin for 57 dinners, all of which he has documented on social media. He has more than 120 additional dinners scheduled through August.
Joseph shared his story publicly, he has received a range of reactions. Some have expressed respect for his decision, while others have urged him to reconsider.
The 28-year-old continues to share videos highlighting the ongoing struggles he faces with his bipolar disorder. Although he values the sense of community from the dinners, he has stated that he feels neither better nor worse as a result.
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, bipolar disorder is a manic-depressive illness that causes severe fluctuations in mood and energy levels.
