Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump.

India has strongly condemned the United States’ decision to impose an additional 25% tariff on its imports, calling the move “unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable.” The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a sharply worded statement in response to President Donald Trump’s announcement, which cited India’s continued oil trade with Russia as the reason for the heightened tariffs.

The MEA emphasized that India’s energy imports are guided by market dynamics and the imperative of securing affordable and reliable energy for its 1.4 billion citizens. It underscored that New Delhi has been transparent in communicating its position on the matter and described Washington’s actions as “deeply regrettable.”

Highlighting the broader global context, the ministry noted that several other countries continue to import Russian oil based on their national interests. It argued that targeting India alone for punitive trade measures was discriminatory and reaffirmed that the government would take all necessary steps to protect the nation’s economic and strategic interests.
