Assam is set to host global music sensation Post Malone for a live concert in Guwahati on December 8, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma announced at a press conference in Golaghat. This marks the American artist’s first performance in the Northeast and only his second in India.
The concert will inaugurate Assam’s new ‘concert economy’ initiative – a government-backed effort aimed at promoting tourism, culture, and local business through large-scale live music events. Following the Guwahati show, similar events are being planned in Jorhat and Dibrugarh as part of the new policy.
“There has been significant success in other states through concert tourism. Meghalaya has hosted several such events, and Coldplay’s concert in Ahmedabad reportedly generated Rs 600 crore in revenue,” said Sarma. “We had announced a policy on concert tourism in this year’s budget, and the Cabinet has officially approved it,” he added.
Post Malone’s upcoming performance in Guwahati will be his second in India. He first took the stage at the Zomato Feeding India Concert in December 2022 at Mumbai’s Mahalaxmi Race Course, where he performed for over 25,000 fans in an event aimed at raising awareness about malnutrition.
While Sarma confirmed Malone’s participation, there has been no official statement from the artist yet. Details regarding ticket sales and venue specifics are still awaited.
Highlighting the economic and cultural potential of concert tourism, Sarma said, “Assam had been left out of the concert tourism economy. With this new policy, we believe we can compete healthily with our neighbouring state, Meghalaya.”
Meghalaya, particularly its capital Shillong, has hosted a string of high-profile concerts featuring international stars like Ed Sheeran, Bryan Adams, Nick Carter, and the American rock band Mr Big, drawing large crowds from Assam and beyond.
With this new initiative, Assam aims to position itself as a vibrant destination for live music and cultural tourism – starting with a headline performance by one of the world’s biggest music artists.
