María Corina Machado wins the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize

The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Venezuelan politician María Corina Machado, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced on Friday, October 10. Machado was recognized for “her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.” The Nobel Peace Prize is the only one of the annual Nobel awards presented in Oslo, Norway.

US President Donald Trump, who had been considered a potential contender for the prize, did not receive the award this year. The announcement came amid global attention on Machado’s efforts to advance democracy in Venezuela, highlighting her role as a leading voice against authoritarianism.

Machado’s recognition by the Norwegian Nobel Committee underscores the importance of democratic activism and human rights advocacy. Her work has drawn international attention to the challenges faced by Venezuelans under the country’s political regime and her ongoing efforts to promote a peaceful transition to democracy.
