WhatsApp banned over 99 lakh Indian users in January 2025 for violating platform rules and policies

WhatsApp has implemented robust measures to combat scams and fraudulent activities on its platform. According to the latest monthly report, the Meta-owned messaging service banned over 9.9 million accounts in India between January 1 and January 30. Of these, 1.3 million accounts were proactively banned before any user complaints were made.

In addition to the proactive actions, WhatsApp received 9,474 grievance reports from users in India via its official channels. However, only 239 accounts were flagged and acted upon based on these complaints. Ban-related appeals were the most common type of report, with 4,212 appeals filed, resulting in 111 accounts being reinstated after review.

The bans were enforced for violating specific policies under Rule (1)(d) and Rule 3A(7) of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. WhatsApp uses automated systems along with user feedback to identify and take action against accounts breaching its Terms of Service. Violations that lead to account bans include:

  • Sending bulk or unsolicited messages, including automated or mass messaging.

  • Sharing unauthorized contact lists or adding individuals to groups without consent.

  • Overusing broadcast lists, which may result in reports and bans.

  • Spreading misinformation, hate speech, or engaging in illegal activities.

By adhering to these policies, users can ensure a secure and respectful experience on WhatsApp while preventing disruptions to their access.
