Prime Minister Narendra Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted the audience with “Namaste, Konnichiwa, Japan” as he addressed the India-Japan Joint Economic Forum in Tokyo, soon after landing for his first standalone visit to the country in nearly seven years. During his two-day visit, he will focus on deepening bilateral relations, advancing India’s national interests, and boosting cooperation on regional and global fronts.

In his opening remarks, PM Modi underlined Japan’s significance as a trusted partner in India’s growth journey. He highlighted Japanese contributions across key sectors — from metro rail projects and manufacturing to semiconductors and startups — noting that Japanese companies have already invested more than USD 40 billion in India.

India’s ambassador to Japan, Sibi George, added that the scope of talks will not remain limited to bilateral matters but also encompass plurilateral and multilateral frameworks. He pointed to platforms like the Quad, which play an important role in fostering peace, security, and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
