Yogi Adityanath has etched his name in history by becoming the longest-serving Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. He has surpassed the tenure of Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant, the state’s first Chief Minister, by serving 8 years and 132 days in office – five days more than Pant’s total of 8 years and 127 days, including his pre-Independence tenure.
Adityanath first took oath as Chief Minister on March 19, 2017. Under his leadership, the BJP secured a commanding victory in the 2022 Assembly elections, enabling him to begin a second consecutive term. He became the first Chief Minister in Uttar Pradesh’s history to complete a full five-year term and return to office without interruption.
He is also only the fifth CM in the state’s history to win a second straight term. The four Chief Ministers before him who achieved this were Sampurnananda (1957), Chandrabhanu Gupta (1962), Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna (1974), and Narayan Dutt Tiwari (1985).
Yogi Adityanath, the 22nd Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, is a senior leader in the BJP and a prominent political figure in the state. Before entering politics, he served as the Mahant (head priest) of the Gorakhnath Math in Gorakhpur.
The current Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly, elected in March 2022, is scheduled to complete its term on May 22, 2027. The next state elections are expected to be held in 2027.
