Zohran Mamdani, New York City’s 34-year-old mayor-elect and the first Muslim, South Asian, and youngest person in a century to hold the office, began his first day in office with a casual yet symbolic lunch.
Joined by Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Mamdani met at Laliguras Bistro in Jackson Heights, sharing chai, momo and other snacks, highlighting his Indian heritage.
On social media, Mamdani called it a “busy first day” filled with interviews, transition announcements, and meetings, but noted that lunch with Ocasio-Cortez was a standout moment.

Mamdani’s historic victory has been celebrated for its message of inclusivity and diversity. His campaign focused on closing wealth gaps, promoting affordable housing, and embracing his cultural identity, even quoting Jawaharlal Nehru’s ‘Tryst with Destiny’ in his victory speech.
Born in Uganda to Indian parents, Mamdani now steps into one of the most visible political roles in the United States, marking a new chapter for New York City politics.
