Shyamkanu Mahanta, organiser of the North East India Festival and one of the accused in singer Zubeen Garg’s death, has moved the Supreme Court seeking relief just two days after his arrest. Mahanta was arrested on Wednesday by the Assam CID’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) along with Garg’s manager, Siddharth Sharma.
In his petition, Mahanta has urged the apex court to transfer the probe from the Assam SIT to either the NIA or CBI, while also demanding that the FIR related to the case be shifted to another state to ensure an impartial investigation. Mahanta is the younger brother of former Assam DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, who currently serves as the Chief Information Commissioner of the Assam State Information Commission.
The sudden death of the popular Assamese singer in Singapore has sparked shock and outrage among fans, with many questioning the circumstances surrounding it. Assam Police have since added murder charges to the FIR against both Mahanta and Sharma as the probe into Garg’s mysterious death continues.
