Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the last rites of celebrated Assamese singer Zubeen Garg will take place on September 23, 2025, at Kamarkuchi-Hatimura in Sonapur, near Guwahati. The decision was made in consultation with Garg’s family, who preferred the cremation to be held in or around Guwahati, despite public appeals for it to be in Jorhat, his hometown.
In a show of respect, the Assam government has extended the state mourning period until September 23. The public can pay their respects at the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex (Sarusajai Stadium) in Guwahati until Tuesday, September 23.
Zubeen Garg tragically passed away on September 19, 2025, in a swimming accident in Singapore. His death has left a deep void in the Assamese music community and among fans worldwide.
The cremation will be conducted with full state honours, reflecting Garg’s immense contribution to Assamese and Indian music. Memorials are also planned in Jorhat and Kamarkuchi to honor his legacy.
Thousands of fans are expected to gather to bid a final farewell, celebrating the life and enduring influence of the beloved singer.
