Plans have been finalized for the cremation and memorials of beloved Assamese singer Zubeen Garg. A plot of land has been earmarked in Hatimura, Kamarkuchi NC Village under Panbari Mouza of Sonapur Revenue Circle, Kamrup (M) district, where his last rites will be performed on September 23.
In addition to Kamarkuchi, memorials are also planned in Jorhat, the singer’s birthplace, to honor his enduring contributions to Assamese music and culture.
Thousands of fans from across Assam have been paying tribute to Garg, gathering in Guwahati and Jorhat to sing his songs, light candles, and offer prayers. The emotional farewell has drawn large crowds at the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex in Guwahati, where fans, along with his wife Garima Saikia Garg, joined in mourning the music icon.
“The ashes of Zubeen Garg will be taken to Jorhat and a memorial will be built there honouring his connection with the historic town,” the CM said.
The Assam Cricket Association, in collaboration with the BCCI, will also honour Zubeen Garg during the opening ceremony of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 in Guwahati, featuring a special 40-minute segment to celebrate his life and legacy.
Zubeen Garg tragically passed away on September 19, 2025, in a swimming accident in Singapore, leaving a deep void in the hearts of fans and the Assamese cultural community.
